The core of the exhibition, “Chicken or Egg-Dilemma (THE ANIMALS)”, is Kerstin Cmelka’s 2016 produced feature film “The Animals”: an artistic tour de force on the development of its protagonist ‘Kerstin,’ who is driven by the opinions and expectations of her coaches and colleagues. Through various rehearsals, theoretical considerations and intensive coaching-practices, some more, some less successful, she springs from one island to the next, to play “Irena”, the female character in the plot “Cat People”, and as an actress to finally internalize, embody, and ultimately transform her.
More than just an illustration of the film, the presentation, “Which came first: the chicken or the egg?” does not foreground the film itself, but rather works on the protagonists within the reference system of “The Animals”. The film's central theme – our self-presentation and what we are willing to give for it – is thereby continually examined. For the exhibition, Cmelka selected artistic productions that were influential for the film or were resulting from it, works related to the film or others that accompanied its production: E.g. the 1997–2002 collectively written novel “Die Welt in der wir wohnten” (The World We Lived In) by Gruppe M (M. Mentrup, C. Basrawi and M. Horn), a 2012 lecture from the film “Boredom of the disgust & monotony of the tediousness" by Rouzbeh Rashidi, the 2016 collaboration, “Kunst und Klumpert” (Art and Trash) by M. Gorkiewicz & K. Cmelka or the long-term photographic series, “Becoming (M)other” and “The Age of Anti-Ageing” by Stewart Home.
Within the architectural design made by Manuel Gorkiewicz especially for this exhibition, both performance and art productions as well as the actual biographies of “The Animals” film partners and artist colleagues are being re-staged in a new form and format. (K. Cmelka)

Im Zentrum von „Henne-Ei-Dilemma (THE ANIMALS)“ steht der 2016 produzierte Spielfilm „The Animals“ (Kerstin Cmelka, D/A,2016)
